Aine is the head of Worldwide Legal Operations and Chief of Staff for VMware’s General Counsel. She is responsible for strategic business planning and budgets, technology and automation, resource allocation, vendor cost management, data and business intelligence, communications, knowledge management, and professional development programs. She and her team drive operational excellence through iterative, scalable innovation.

Aine fosters cohesion and synchronicity in a legal department that is global (25 cities in 16 countries), multi-cultural, and multi-disciplinary. The department’s composition (53% female, 23% underrepresented minority) reflects her commitment to diversity and inclusion. That commitment extends beyond the bounds of her own authority. Aine is a member of the VMinclusion Council setting the diversity and inclusion strategy for the company. In 2012, she was part of a small team of senior women who set up the Women’s Innovation Network in EMEA to promote and increase gender diversity to drive VMware’s success. In 2014, the company recognized the value of this initiative and expanded the effort companywide. Rechristened VMwomen, Aine’s program is now a strategic business initiative that, at its core, is about true cultural transformation. For this and other contributions, Aine earned VMware’s EPIC2 Achievement Award, which honors extraordinary team members for their ability to go above and beyond on a daily basis, and demonstrate a quality of character that is truly remarkable.

Aine ensures that her department pairs its cultural contributions (353 pro bono/service learning hours last year) with a data-driven focus on the business’s bottom-line success. She has achieved an 18% reduction in legal spend as a percentage of revenue over the last four years. Trained in Lean Six Sigma, she brings a systems view to problem solving, devising sustainable solutions that scale. For example, her recent re-engineering of the company’s entire contracting lifecycle, from automated playbooks to electronic signatures, has accelerated revenues through a 50% reduction in cycle times. But the feat was more than new technology, it was a retooling of an entire workflow through modularized templates (down 50%), reduced escalations (down 74%), and a managed-service relationship that has saved the company millions. Such measurable improvements in client service is among the many reasons VMware was recently recognized by the Association of Corporate Counsel as a Value Champion “for making a difference, not only in your organization through creativity and value-based legal management skills, but also for affecting change within the legal industry.”

Aine graduated cum laude from the University of Limerick, Ireland with a B.A. in Law and European Studies (1993) and an M.A. in European Integration – Law, Economics and Politics (1995). After graduating from the Law Society of Ireland, Aine was admitted to the roll of solicitors by the Irish High Court in 1997. Before founding the legal operations team in 2013, Aine spent 8 years in senior roles on the VMware legal team, including as head of the EMEA. Prior to joining VMware, Aine worked in Paris, London and Ireland in various senior in-house roles, managing legal and cross-functional teams in global corporations. Her previous roles include serving as the Legal Counsel and managing director of the international headquarters for Siebel Systems in Ireland (acquired by Oracle) and EMEA General Counsel of APC-MGE, part of the Schneider Group.
